Outcomes of the WEAthens 2014 Conference
News from WISIONS posted on January 13th, 2015
The aim of the event was to stimulate international exchange between these actors and to foster future collaborations that have the potential to make locally manufactured small wind turbines a more viable technology for sustainable rural electrification. The programme consisted of panel presentations and discussions, small group sessions, laboratory demonstrations, practical workshops, field trips (e.g. to NTUA's test site in Rafinas) and more.
Wind Empowerment acts as both a central knowledge bank and a facilitator of direct connections between its members. The conference participants finally had the chance to meet each other in person and the conference was considered to be a great success. The combination of structured panel presentations with guided small group sessions within the working groups proved a highly effective tool for participants to build lasting relationships by gaining a better understanding of the needs of the Southern partners and of the skills and resources available to the Northern partners. This also allowed direct South/South links to develop, sharing lessons learned and promoting future collaboration between Southern partners.
What is more, structuring the conference in this way enabled participants to develop personal relationships with their fellow group members and to experience a sense of belonging to a group with a real shared goal. The roadmap of actions provides a concrete pathway to achieving this goal, which is specific, measurable, achievable and time-bound.

6th RedBioLAC Meeting in Cali, Colombia
News from WISIONS posted on January 8th, 2015
The meeting consisted of a wide range of activities aiming to improve and spread knowledge about the applicability and benefits of biogas technologies in Latin America and the Caribbean. The event started with a two-day course on the design of biogas systems for several substrates (treatment of manure, organic waste and waste water), in different scales (domestic, commercial and semi-industrial) and for different applications (thermal energy, electricity, production of bio fertiliser). Additionally, participants had the opportunity to interact with manufacturers and providers of systems and components and to find out more about their products and services.
On the third day of the meeting, a tubular digester was installed at a farm near the conference venue. The installation process itself served as a platform for exchanging knowledge on several issues, such as technology design, construction and installation, operation and maintenance, as well as the use of both, the biogas and the effluent. In an interactive workshop the participants identified and described the various aspects that influence the adoption of domestic biogas technologies.
In more than 30 keynote presentations over the last two days of the meeting, scientists, industry experts, NGOs and farmers shared their knowledge and experience of technical advances, specific applications and benefits of the technology, as well as discussing the potential and need for further development. In a second workshop, participants focused on identifying the barriers that currently hinder the development of a robust biogas sector in their own countries.
Most of the materials used or developed during the event are available online on RedBioLAC's website.

2015 will see three new calls for SEPS project proposals, with the first one launched in February. More details will be announced soon.
Over the coming weeks and months, we will also relaunch our Partnerships and Networks homepage with a new look and better presentation of the networks' activities. In addition, our Technology Radar pages will receive a complete overhaul, making them easier to navigate. This will make it more straightforward to understand the correlation between the sustainable energy technologies and their corresponding SEPS Energy Projects.
