Meet The WISIONS Team At The 10th LCS-RNet Meeting & ISAP 2018 In Yokohama, Japan

News from WISIONS posted on July 7th, 2018

The WISIONS team will participate in the 10th Annual Meeting of the LCS-RNet on 17 July 2018 as well as ISAP – the International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific from 18-19 July 2018 in Yokohama, Japan.Read moreMinimize

To fight climate change, nearly 200 countries signed the Paris Agreement in December 2015. However, the current Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to lower greenhouse gas emissions will not be sufficient to realise the well below 2 degrees target. What is required are more ambitious greenhouse gas reduction scenarios, roadmaps and actions to achieve zero-carbon.

On 17 July, the 10th annual meeting of the International Research Network for Low Carbon Societies (LCS-RNet) will be held in Yokohama, Japan. In this meeting, proposed actions towards an ambitious decarbonised world in various regions and sectors will be shared and their effective implementation discussed.

Dr. Julia Terrapon-Pfaff of the WISIONS team will give a presentation within a session on the 1.5/2 degree targets and long-term low-carbon global development strategies, which will focus on the implementation of NDCs in emerging, developing and least developed countries. The meeting is free of charge. If you wish to participate, please follow this link.

The LCS-RNet meeting takes place in conjunction with the International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific, which Dr. Julia Terrapon-Pfaff will also attend.

Next Webinar: “Great Expectations – Productive Uses of Energy Off the Grid”

News from WISIONS posted on June 28th, 2018

On 9th July at 2:00 PM CEST WISIONS will host the fourth in a series of webinars 2018. It is entitled "Great Expectations – Productive Uses of Energy Off the Grid". Register now!Read moreMinimize

Great expectations abound for the so-called “productive uses of energy”. These uses of energy go well beyond solar lamps and cell phone charging. They aim to fundamentally improve livelihoods for people living beyond the grid by powering computers, agricultural machinery, and more.

Funders increasingly support energy projects and programmes that use energy productively. The assumption is that using energy for productive uses will enhance social and economic development and help reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The productive uses of energy could certainly help to reach these goals, as many examples attest. However, systematic evidence of these outcomes and impacts is still limited and questions remain:

Which complementary services are necessary to establish productive uses? Do productive uses of energy contribute to social and economic development? Why do many energy projects fall short to establish productive activities? Is there a tipping point for the amount of energy that will have the greatest impact? Which “productive” activities should be supported, and who will benefit?

Join us in this webinar to discuss these important questions. You will also receive an overview of the current state of evidence on productive uses of energy and learn about pitfalls and successes along the way to improving livelihoods across the Global South.

A Biogas E-Learning Platform For Latin America And The Caribbean

News from WISIONS posted on June 27th, 2018

One of our most recent SEPS exchange activities aims to expand "Biogas for Energy" – an already available e-learning platform – in order to reach a broader audience of students, technicians, officials and other practitioners from Latin America and the Caribbean.Read moreMinimize

Activities build upon the existing training materials offered by WISIONS' project partner CIBiogás, as well as including wider knowledge and experiences from RedBioLAC. The courses will be offered in a dynamic and interactive web learning environment by means of a Portuguese and Spanish language internet website offering a bilingual tutor and formal evaluation procedures to ensure knowledge transmission and teaching quality and to prevent students withdrawing from the courses. Courses have the purpose of introducing the issue of biogas in the Latin American and Caribbean context,
with a special focus on small scale biodigesters.

Recently, CIBiogás successfully concluded the following activities:

  • Definition of course topics and detailed contents to be offered under the framework of this SEPS project
  • Creation of educational documents for each course (the "Small Scale Biodigester" course is already being elaborated by one of the consultants
  • Selection of consultants who will produce the course contents

The next steps include the digitalisation of course contents, the technical validation as well as the translation from Portuguese to Spanish language.

More general information on this SEPS exchange activity is available on our SEPS project page: "Biogas for Energy" – E-Learning Platform for Latin America and the Caribbean
