Rehabilitation and Upgrading of Micro Hydro Plants in the Philippines
News from WISIONS posted on December 11th, 2017
The Adugao power plant is a small 7.5 KW power system built in a remote area in northern Luzon, Philippines. Before its construction in 2000, neighbouring indigenous communities solely relied on firewood for lighting purposes and had never experienced electric power in their lifetimes. 13 years later, the system began to show major signs of wear and bad maintenance.
In 2015, local partner SIBAT with funding from WISIONS started a rehabilitation programme aiming to restore the potential of the Adugao MHP. During the last two years, SIBAT was able to:
- fully restore the power plant, which is now running 24/7
- avoid downtimes of the system by providing constant water flow
- install a load controller and construct reliable concrete canal
The successful project development demonstrated that access to energy can be acquired and sustained through a community-based approach in which the local population formulates and is able to enforce policies to manage and care for an energy system.

WISONS Supports Workshop on Financing Renewable Energy in South East Asia
News from WISIONS posted on November 27th, 2017
Energy entrepreneurs throughout Asia provide a range of technological solutions to address the growing demand for sustainable energy services in the region. These local entrepreneurs service low-income rural populations including farmers, small businesses and households with affordable energy access. However, these enterprises often face a serious constraint that limits their ability to grow: access to affordable capital.
The interactive workshop “Financing renewable energy in South East Asia” is organized by Nexus for Development in cooperation with GERES and S3IDF and with support of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and WISIONS. A total of 50-70 energy entrepreneurs, financiers, and other relevant stakeholders are expected to participate on 5th December 2017 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The workshop will include new research on the financing landscape, an interactive roundtable discussion, a practitioner’s showcasing session, and experts sharing learnings from their successes and failures.

WISIONS Team Will Participate in "Travelling Conferences" in South East Asia
News from WISIONS posted on November 26th, 2017
The Travelling Conferences belong to a series of events funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, in which German experts and early-career researchers in other countries present current research topics. These events are meant to provide platforms for the development of international cooperation.
The Reiner Lemoire Institute will host one of the Travelling Conferences on the use of renewable energy for sustainable energy provision on Southeast Asian islands. Together with research and professional partners, the project team will travel to Bangkok, Singapore, and Jakarta from 27 November – 5 December 2017 in order to delve into and discuss the need for research and collaborative potential with local research institutions in this area. They have chosen specific institutions in those three countries, which are already researching this issue in order to identify overlapping interests and points of contact within the dialog. In the long term, they hope to initiate and develop partnerships for joint project development.
The WISIONS team as representative of Wuppertal Institute will participate in these Travelling Conferences and introduce the Wuppertal Institute and its fields of research during university workshops in Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia.
