Demonstrating The Potential Of Integrating A Micro Hydro Solar Hybrid System With The National Grid

Access to reliable electricity makes a significant contribution to better living conditions, sustainable development and economic growth in rural areas. Lack of access has negative impacts on education, health, employment and irrigation – affecting many aspects of life and livelihood. Micro grids are often use to bring electrification to remote rural areas in developing countries; they usually use local renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, hydro or biomass. Micro grids often operate in isolation from the central grid or are off-grid, but the extension of central grids to rural areas provides opportunities to interconnect existing micro grids with national or regional electricity infrastructure.

In India, evidence shows that villagers often choose to adopt a connection to the grid. Interconnection of the micro-grids with the national grid can offer local people a more reliable electricity supply, can ensure the sustainability of micro-generation systems and may provide an opportunity for operators or the local community to increase revenue by selling surplus electricity to the utility company.

WISIONS' project partners Ashden India Renewable Energy Collective (AIREC) have completed their activities, which started in October 2015. These included:

  • Successful awareness-raising activities within the communities
  • The technical assessment of an existing micro hydro plant
  • The design and supply of a 5 kW solar PV power plant
  • Various civil works (renovation of micro hydro plant, installation/connection of solar PV power plant)
  • The design and supply of an intelligent circuit controller system (managing the available electricity)
  • The connection to a 415 V Main Board to support grid connectivity

This is the first project of its kind in India (integrating a very small hydro project with a) solar technologies and b) the national grid). The successful demonstration of this system will facilitate the replication of such plants in other states in India.

Off-grid renewable energy projects sometimes remain off-grid in the long-term. But in some cases, the national electricity grids reach these areas, leaving communities, governments, and other stakeholders with major decisions to make.

In principle, off-grid mini-grids powered by micro-hydro, solar PV or by combination of renewable energy technologies (hybrid generation) can be connected to the national grid. However, many technical, regulatory, and management challenges remain.

For other solutions, such as solar home systems, the question is whether they are sustainable and might be a good and independent alternative to the grid – especially if the grid does not offer stable service.

In the worst case, however, the grid's arrival can lead to the abandonment of off-grid systems and a loss not only of the financial and resource investments, but possibly also of jobs, technical know-how, and autonomy.

What will become of these stand-alone renewable energy systems or micro-grid solutions? Will they sustain and survive? Can and shall they become connected to the grid? Which are preconditions and challenges? And how can communities with off-grid systems best plan and prepare for this possibility?

In this webinar, we will shed light on the experiences faced across the global south through several case studies and hear first-hand what happens when the grid arrives.

Workshop: A Country Level Market Assessment for Small Wind Turbines in Nepal

Wind has historically struggled to find a place in rural electrification in Nepal, being often overshadowed by hugely successful micro-hydro power and a recent widespread use of solar photovoltaic systems. Meanwhile, the country does exhibit significant wind resources, especially in the immense mountaineous regions that dominate the north of the country.

This SEPS project aims to quantify the potential market in Nepal, while identifying the existing barriers and bottlenecks to growth. Once these barriers are identified KAPEG hopes to formulate and implement recommendations and guidelines to improve the enabling environment for small wind stakeholders.

The project is being conducted in three phases:

  • Stakeholder interview campaign (identifying difficulties in planning, implementation and maintenance)
  • Geospatial and techno-economic modelling (to quantify the market potential and identify suitable locations)
  • Stakeholder engagement workshop (to draw on previous results to make final recommendations)

Recently, the project team has conducted the stakeholder interviews in Kathmandu; finished visiting six wind solar hybrid systems across Nepal while collecting data from the end users; and accumulated most of the data necessary for the market assessment (like available wind and solar resources, population data, etc.).

All the collected data are currently being analysed and will be presented at a final market assessment workshop on 18th April 2018 from 9:30am to 3:10pm (Nepal time) at Yalamaya Kendra, Patandhoka, Lalitpur, Nepal. If you would like to attend, please register here.
