WISIONS of Sustainability

The main objective of WISIONS is to make clean energy a default solution for basic energy needs in developing regions, by helping local partners to identify successes and bring them to scale through regional networks, marketing and demonstration. Rebuilding Infrastructure for Sustainable Energy Access in Nepal

News from WISIONS posted on September 20th, 2017

One of our SEPS projects aimed to rebuild infrastructure that was destroyed by an earthquake in central Nepal during April and May 2015. The project was implemented in the Gorkha District of Nepal (the epicentre of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake and one of the most affected districts) and has now been successfully completed.Read moreMinimize

The 2015 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks triggered landslides and other geo-hazards, causing massive destruction. This also affected micro-hydro power plants (MHPs) which had been installed by Practical Action in 2013 and 2014. All these MHPs were destroyed by the earthquake and became non-operational. Consequently, the 14 energy-based enterprises which had been established during the project period were no longer able to operate.

This project worked towards restoring access to electricity for lighting and for operating appliances at domestic level, as well as for powering enterprises and community services. It restored three micro-hydro plants in the Gorkha District, which power 585 households as well as ten enterprises and schools. They now feature an earthquake-resilient design. This initially posed a challenge to local manufacturers and contractors as it is still uncommon to construct aseismic buildings in Nepal.

Apart from the restoration of three MHPs, the activities of Practical Action and local partner Goreto Gorkha included the mobilisation of communities (labour and materials), capacity-building measures for MHP management committees and operators, and the provision of technical and operational monitoring.

More general information is available on our SEPS project page, where a detailed project summary will be published soon: RISE - Rebuilding Infrastructure for Sustainable Energy Access

Meet the WISIONS Team at the Annual Conference of the LCS-RNet in Warwick, UK

News from WISIONS posted on September 11th, 2017

The WISIONS team will participate in the 2017 annual conference of the international Low Carbon Societies Research Network (LCS-RNet), which is being held at Warwick University (United Kingdom) from 12th - 13th September 2017.Read moreMinimize

This 9th Annual Meeting of the LCS-RNet will focus on three themes that reflect current debates in international climate change and energy policy, against the backdrop of recent political changes and uncertainties in Europe and the United States. The conference theme for this year is ‘Clean growth and innovation in a changing world’. The conference will focus on three main themes:

1. Innovation: technology, resource productivity and industrial policy

2. Global energy markets and forms of carbon pricing

3. Energy access and low carbon development

The WISIONS team will participate in a session on "Progress Towards the Energy Access Sustainable Development Goal", which takes place on on 13th September at 11:30 AM.

More information on this event is available on LCS-RNet's website.

Meet the WISIONS Team at the 6th Annual Conference of the LCEDN in Durham, UK

News from WISIONS posted on September 4th, 2017

The WISIONS team will participate in the LCEDN 6th Conference on Equity and Energy Justice on 11th and 12th September 2017 in Durham, United Kingdom.Read moreMinimize

The Low Carbon Energy for Development Network (LCEDN) comprises internationally-renowned universities and thriving energy research institutes, alongside partnerships with the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and expanding worldwide associations.

Working within the broad framework of the UN’s policy of promoting Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) this year's conference is based on the principle that without equity of access and energy justice, there can be no sustainability. The conference will therefore include papers involving any aspect of energy systems emerging to meet the distinctive energy needs of the ‘bottom of pyramid’, lowest quintile in the global south which can contribute to the understanding of how equity and justice are essential components of sustainability.

The WISIONS team will present a paper entitled How Can Energy Access Lead to Improved Living Conditions? What Elements Can Trigger Productive Energy Use in Energy-Poor Areas? on 11 September, 3:15 PM.

More information on the conference programme and venue is available on LCEDN's website.
