Playing the "Minigrid Game" in Malaysia

The "Minigrid Game" is a role-playing game built around a representation of a community minigrid system. In the game, players come together to find out their household consumption and make critical energy-related decisions, such as purchasing appliances, managing finances to pay electricity bills on time, setting energy tariffs, and developing a healthy community fund. The game’s software uses networked computers to simulate households, and players interact with the software through a digital user interface.

The first part of this exchange activity led by ENACT was a series of three minigrid planning workshops held in rural villages in Eastern Malaysia, where local residents will played the "Minigrid Game". 

These took place on 17 July in Terian (20 participants), on 18 July in Buayan (30 participants), and on 19 July in Timpaysa (10 participants).

This is the last in a series of three webinars on mini-grids and will examine:

  • Social and technical pre-conditions, such as load management and technical reliability, and options such as mechanical drive for agricultural processing
  • Increase of load factor through PEU and corresponding increase of the economic viability of the system; and
  • Three examples of systems promoting productive end use in different countries such as Indonesia, Myanmar and Nepal. Presentation of the pros and cons of electrifying "existing activities” versus “new businesses”

The webinar will take place on Wednesday 5th July 2017 at 11:00 AM CEST.

Rebuilding Sustainable Energy Infrastructure in Nepal

In 2015, Nepal was struck by a major earthquake which triggered landslides and caused massive destruction to the country. Many of the micro-hydro power systems providing energy to the poor rural population were damaged and this caused huge losses to the communities. The WISIONS initiative is supporting Practical Action in rebuilding sustainable energy access by restoring the affected systems.Read moreMinimize

This SEPS project started in September 2015 and supports the rehabilitation of three earthquake-struck micro-hydro systems. Recent project progress includes the complete reconstruction of the Tamsyo Khola micro-hydro power plant including final testing and commissioning activities. 

The rehabilitation of the Jhyalla Bhumi II and Andheri plants is in progress and should be completed by the end of the month (June 2017). Civil construction works have been successfully carried out at the Jhyalla site, with a few electromechanical works outstanding. In Andheri, most of the working steps have also been completed, with the exception of the repair of a water canal and intake site, which have recently been affected by landslides. Final working steps include the capacity-building and training of MHP operators, which will be concluded after all plants are fully restored.
