RedBioLAC: Call for Student Exchanges

News from WISIONS posted on January 23rd, 2017

RedBioLAC, the Latin American biogas network, is looking for exchange students in the field of anaerobic digestion. The support scheme aims to facilitate students’ activities, such as theses, investigations or internships at their places of study, assisting them in becoming ambassadors and advocates for subjects included in the network's strategic alignment and/or in solving problems presented in its first publication.Read moreMinimize

The initiative is the result of the network's main strategic axis: to share knowledge and bring together students to become the necessary generational succession for the development of the biogas sector in Latin America, as well as further promoting the RedBioLAC network.

A maximum grant of 1,250 USD is available per student and there will be two calls this year, with the first one closing on Tuesday 28 February 2017.

To apply, please download the application form and send it to redbiolac@gmail.com or send them an email if you have any questions or concerns. Please note that all documents are available in Spanish only!

RedBioLAC's first publication is available here: Opportunities for the Development of a Sustainable Small and Medium Scale Biodigester Sector in LAC (in Spanish).

Handbook on Biogas Integration into Sustainable Farming Systems

News from WISIONS posted on January 9th, 2017

IEI Asia, a SEPS project partner in India, aimed to provide clean cooking fuel at village level in the south east of Karnataka state. As part of an upscaling phase of the project supported by WISIONS, an extensive handbook focusing on sustainable farming systems integrated with energy from waste was produced.Read moreMinimize

Biogas generation through the anaerobic digestion of biomass has been carried out successfully in India and other parts of the world for decades. In this SEPS project, biogas was produced mainly from banana stem-waste at small rural banana plantations and then distributed to more than 70 households in the village of Gundigere for cooking purposes. The project has demonstrated that a biogas system can be based solely on stem waste from banana plantations, although the methane generation potential of these parts of the plant is much lower than that of fruit and peel.

IEI’s in-depth handbook offers potential users information on:

  • Integrated banana cultivation, biogas generation and stove-fuel delivery
  • Operation at family/community/village level rather than industrial scale
  • Actual implementation and operation in India
  • Background information on technologies and resources
