Practice-to-Policy Exchange in Sri Lanka

The WISIONS team will participate in the Practice-to-Policy Exchange for Grid Interconnected Micro and Mini Hydropower in South and Southeast Asia, which will take place from 26 to January 29 January 2016 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

This workshop is one of our SEPS exchange activities and aims to nurture knowledge exchange between multi-actors for grid-connected micro hydro technology across the region of South and Southeast Asia and to enable members of the Hydro Empowerment Network (HPNET) to operate renewable energy technologies independently of the national grid.

Despite MHP practitioners expressing a strong interest in grid interconnection, its development is at a nascent stage with wide variability across the region. India, Indonesia, Nepal and Sri Lanka have installed grid interconnected MHP with some success, while developers in Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan and the Philippines demonstrate strong interest but currently have no interconnected projects. Optimal grid interconnection policy requires productive collaboration between developers, government agencies and utility companies.

To address this gap between practitioners and policies, HPNET member Janathakshan will host an exchange connecting developers, government representatives and utility providers from the above-listed countries in order to facilitate a regional understanding and strategy for grid interconnectivity, based on current policies and actual experiences from the field. The event will include themed sessions, field visits and strategy-building workshops focusing on the specific local contexts of the participants.

Further information is available on the HPNET website.
