WISIONS of Sustainability

The main objective of WISIONS is to make clean energy a default solution for basic energy needs in developing regions, by helping local partners to identify successes and bring them to scale through regional networks, marketing and demonstration. Where the Winds Meet – Small Wind Turbines in Última Esperanza, Chile

News from WISIONS posted on October 11th, 2017

One of our SEPS exchange activities aimed to create a local knowledge group for the self-construction of small-scale wind turbines in the south of Chile, through an international exchange of knowledge with Argentinian members of the Wind Empowerment network. Read moreMinimize

The activities were carried out in Puerto Natales, in the region of Magallanes in southern Chile, and seeked to build, strengthen and disseminate the local competences that are necessary to:

  • Construct, maintain and repair small wind turbines
  • Install small wind turbines for off-grid rural electrification
  • Measure small wind turbine performances and local wind resources
During a workshop in June 2017, the participants were guided through the construction of a 350W small wind turbine (1.8 m diameter), based on the widely adopted Piggott open-source design. The turbine is installed in Estancia La Fernanda, a family farm around 13 km from Puerto Natales.

The farm has difficult access to electricity in the winter, when it mostly depends on a diesel generator. The family participated in the workshop, and is now responsible for the correct operation and maintenance of the system.

A detailed summary of the activities will soon be published on our SEPS project page: “Where the Winds Meet” – Local Construction of Small Wind Turbines in Última Esperanza, Chile.

WISIONS Supports the First Central American Micro-Hydro Conference in Nicaragua

News from WISIONS posted on October 3rd, 2017

One of our most recent SEPS exchange activities aims to promote the exchange of knowledge and sharing of experiences between practitioners involved in small-scale hydroelectric projects in Central America. To achieve this, the first Central American Conference of Small-Scale Hydroelectric Generators will take place from 11th – 13th October 2017 in Managua, Nicaragua.Read moreMinimize

Electrification in remote rural areas continues to be a challenge in Central America. Once micro-hydro projects are completed, many power plants are managed and administered by community entities. These entities work to guarantee access to energy at local level, but face a series of obstacles that threaten energy generation and limit the technical, economic, social and environmental sustainability of the micro-hydro plants.

In this context, Asociación Fénix, with the support of WISIONS, is promoting the First Central American Small Hydroelectric Conference: Sharing Experiences and Articulating Efforts for Efficient Management of Clean Energy Supply.

The conference will be held from 11th – 13th October 2017 at the Hotel Camino Real Convention Center in the city of Managua, Nicaragua. The WISIONS team will be in attendance, promoting our initiative.

The full conference programme is available here (in Spanish) [pdf].
