Improving Livelihoods in Esmeraldas, Ecuador

"Creciendo Esmeraldas con Energía Renovable" (CRECER) was a pilot programme implemented by CorpoEsmeraldas, Green Empowerment and FEDETA, and was supported by WISIONS. The project’s initial objective was to improve cacao production and processing in ways that also restored the region’s fragile natural environment, improving lives and livelihoods while enhancing the resilience of rural communities in the face of climate change.

With the backing of our SEPS Energy Projects initiative, the project team installed passive solar dryers and biogas digester technologies to support smallholder cacao farmers. 18 months after successfully implementing the project, we continued to support the monitoring, evaluation and expansion activities. 

The replication efforts (e.g. in Carchi and Manabí Provinces) focused both on building partner organisations’ technical capacity in biogas digesters and passive solar dryers, and on creating community interest in replicating these technologies and supporting associated agro-ecological training in the future. 

Furthermore, the organisation of a national biodigester experience exchange event in September 2016 led to the creation of a national Ecuadorian biogas network (Red de Biodigestores del Ecuador, RedBioEc), which follows the principles of the neighbouring networks RedBioCOL and RedBioLAC.

This is the first in a series of three webinars on mini-grids and will highlight the important technical and non-technical features, as well as pros and cons of mini-grids based on different energy sources to create awareness of the need for differentiation of mini-grid systems. It will also discuss the key points that need to be considered while designing rural electrification programmes with different renewable energy technologies. 

The webinar will take place on May 4, 2017 at 2:00 PM CEST.

Biogas Production from Slaughterhouse Wastewater in Quito, Ecuador

This project is led by CIMNE, who started implementing this technology in mid-2016. Over the last few months, several feasibility and measurement studies have been undertaken, including wastewater flow and characterisation, biogas potential, and the calculation of fuel/water consumption of a boiler used for heating and drying processes at the slaughterhouse.

After designing the biodigesters, four tubular units (100m3 each) were constructed on-site by a local manufacturer. It is estimated these will produce 157m3 of biogas per day from 72m3 of wastewater.

As well as monitoring the operation of the digesters, next steps include the installation of distribution lines transporting the biogas to its point of use: a new boiler to be powered by sustainable energy.
