The Travelling Conferences belong to a series of events funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, in which German experts and early-career researchers in other countries present current research topics. These events are meant to provide platforms for the development of international cooperation.

The Reiner Lemoire Institute will host one of the Travelling Conferences on the use of renewable energy for sustainable energy provision on Southeast Asian islands. Together with research and professional partners, the project team will travel to Bangkok, Singapore, and Jakarta from 27 November – 5 December 2017 in order to delve into and discuss the need for research and collaborative potential with local research institutions in this area. They have chosen specific institutions in those three countries, which are already researching this issue in order to identify overlapping interests and points of contact within the dialog. In the long term, they hope to initiate and develop partnerships for joint project development.

The WISIONS team as representative of Wuppertal Institute will participate in these Travelling Conferences and introduce the Wuppertal Institute and its fields of research during university workshops in Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia.

During the coming weeks, our team will participate in a 'Travelling Conferences' programme in South East Asia and on this occasion visit the Campus of the Asian Institute of Technology near Bangkok, Thailand, where one of our recent SEPS project has been successfully concluded: Renewable Energy Technologies for Integrated Community Farming Systems.

This project aimed to develop a model of an 'Integrated Community Farming System' on the AIT Campus utilising renewable energy technologies to ensure the security of food, nutrition and energy.

This project aligns with AIT’s initiative of a “sustainability living laboratory” to showcase sustainability principles and measures to the AIT community and visitors. To disseminate the model and provide information about how to replicate it, AIT aims to conduct a workshop for regional leaders and their communities. Further information can be retrieved from the project's website

On 16th November 2017, WISIONS is hosting a side-event in Bonn, which will take place in the Post Tower, directly next to the Bonn Zone, the event is entitled:

From Paris to Action at Local Level in the Global South – What Role Can Local Energy Practitioners and Existing Knowledge Networks Play?

Following the adoption of the Paris agreement and the SDG Agenda 2030, the focus of debate is shifting towards (a) how to connect the implementation of both agendas and find synergies; and (b) how to involve and strengthen activities of non-state actors at local level.

Energy practitioners are key actors on the frontline of efforts to provide energy services to unelectrified and under-served areas, thereby contributing to several SDGs simultaneously.

At the same time, energy practitioner knowledge networks have proven to be successful in strengthening capacities and exchange of know-how.

Despite this background, the role of energy practitioners as change agents is often not recognised by themselves, nor reflected in the debates on the SDGs and climate action.

In this panel discussion and two following workshops we would like to discuss these aspects with experts from different fields in the climate, energy and development contexts and with practitioners from Latin America and Asia.

Details on the event's panelists, programme and venue can be found here.
