Implementation of Low Head Micro Hydro to Support Clean Water Supply for a Boarding School

Baiturrahman is a well-known Islamic boarding school in Ciparay, a rural area in southern Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. One of the school's missions is to use renewable energy resources to generate its electricity. The school already uses biogas for cooking and lighting. To generate more electricity, this project plans to harness the existing hydro potential of the river next to the school by implementing an innovative low-head micro-hydro plant (MHP). It is anticipated that the power generated from the 5 kW plant will be enough to operate the school's water pump, which provides clean water for the boarding school.

Local experts from the Research Center for Electrical Power and Mechatronics at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences will execute the design, construction and installation of the MHP. Most of the construction materials required are available locally. A team from the school, comprising students, teachers and other local residents, will assist the engineering team, particularly in providing contact to locals and meeting future repair and maintenance needs. It is anticipated that the MHP will enable the school to fulfill its own energy needs, resulting in both cost savings, which can be used to support poor students, and a reduction in the global use of fossil fuels. In addition, the MHP technology will become part of the school's curriculum, leading to the dissemination of knowledge about sustainable and renewable energy options. Consequently, the project will serve two purposes: to demonstrate a relatively new technology in practice and to disseminate technical know-how, which may lead to further replication in future.
