Integrating Solar Powered Drip Irrigation with Sustainable Charcoal Production

Energy for Sustainable Development Africa (ESDA) designed and implemented a solar water pump and drip irrigation system for a community in Turkana, Kenya. The scheme was based on a previous project where a model for sustainable charcoal production and marketing was developed to set up the appropriate technology and to build capacity in tree regeneration for charcoal. The improved water system was coupled with the integrated food, fuel and fodder sustainable production system, with the result that a variety of products were produced efficiently and sustainably. This diversification offered a new source of income to the community, while also enhancing the integrity of the environment.
