Electrification through gasification is a new and innovative technology for Nepal. The aim of this project is to pilot woody and leafy biomass gasification for rural electrification for energy access through community mobilization. A 22kW gasification unit in Ghiringsundhara Village Development Committee of Tanahun district willbe installed to generate electrical energy, serving around 600 individuals in 130 off-grid rural households. The electricity will not only be used for lighting but also to promote productive use through ICT and other end-use interventions.
The electricity generated will also be used to established locally-demanded enterprises making productive end use like agro processing mill, saw mill, water pumping, poultry farm, etc on need basis. A Pro Poor Tariff Structure to ensure social inclusion and community participation will be introduced. The outcomes of the project will also support the Nepalese government in devising new policies and upscaling similar activities across Nepal. The implementing organization is Winrock International Nepal, in partnership with Nepal Government's AEPC (Alternative Energy Promotion Center) which is the Nodal Agency for implementation of renewable energy and rural electrification programme in the country and FECOFUN (Federation of community forest users Nepal).
