New Catalogue Is Out Now – Sustainable Solutions for Mountain People and Landscapes

How can community-based micro-hydro systems contribute to sustainable landscape practices and vice versa? How can renewable energy solutions and sustainable forest practices contribute to local economic development?

These questions, among others, have been central to our work in the Innovation Lab project in Nepal. In close collaboration with our partners, Winrock International Nepal, the People, Energy & Environment Development Association (PEEDA), and RECOFTC Nepal, we have now published a catalogue that explores these issues in the context of both the challenges and opportunities for rural livelihoods in the mountain communities in the Himalayan country: Sustainable Solutions for Mountain People and Landscapes.

Mountain communities and landscapes are particularly vulnerable to the currently accelerating socio-economic and environmental crisis. Nepal, where more than 40% of the population lives in mountainous areas, faces a multitude of complex and interconnected challenges. To fully harness the opportunities in this dynamic context, an integrated approach is essential – one that places the capacities and livelihoods of individuals and communities at the heart of interventions. At the same time, such efforts must draw on expertise across sectors to build coherent and sustainable responses to complex challenges.

The catalogue is comprised of six factsheets, each presenting one solution with the potential to be integrated into broader strategies that leverage synergies between energy and landscape management. These solutions address some of the most pressing issues shaping the current realities of mountain regions. Developed through an intensive and iterative exchange with local practitioners, affected communities, and Nepalese researchers, the factsheets provide practical guidance, in both Nepali and English, for practitioners and policy makers in the region to design impactful programs. They are also intended to inspire adaptation and replication in other countries with similar conditions.

As a first step, our local partners presented the factsheet catalogue at the Local Government Forum in Badigad Rural Municipality, in the presence of representatives from four local governments: Badigad, Musikot, Tamankhola, and Tarakhola. This forum is a promising new platform for interregional cooperation on issues of regional development.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone involved in the creation of this catalogue – especially our dedicated Nepalese partners. In the coming weeks, we will be featuring each factsheet individually on our social media channels.

You can now find and download the catalogue in the brochures section of our website!
