7th International Sustainability Transitions Conference in Wuppertal, Germany
News from WISIONS posted on September 6th, 2016
The conference is the annual opportunity to share theoretical, empirical and practical advances in the field of sustainability transitions. The conference is part of the activities of the Sustainability Transitions Research Network (STRN) and is linked to the journal Environmental Innovation and Societal Transitions (EIST).
Sustainability transitions are transformations of major socio-technical systems of provision and use in areas such as energy, water, mobility and food towards more sustainable societies. Sustainability transitions research is a multi-disciplinary field with inputs from economics, science and technology studies, geography, political science, management, sociology and history. It is also a transdisciplinary field in the sense that it focuses on “real-world problems”, is impact- and solution-oriented, and aims at fostering societal change towards sustainable development.
The theme for this year’s IST conference is “Exploring Transition Research as Transformative Science”. Contributions will focus on the conceptual and methodological challenges of transformative science, i.e. research that is actively involved in societal transformation processes. We want to reflect on the challenges and lessons learned in concrete research projects, on theoretical contributions advancing our understanding of transitions, and on the role of science and scientists involved in transitions to sustainability. We will also focus on the broad range of issues and debates in sustainability transitions research.
The WISIONS team, as member of the Wuppertal Institute, will actively participate in the conference.
More information on the IST is available here.
8th LCS-RNet Annual Meeting in Wuppertal, Germany
News from WISIONS posted on September 5th, 2016
The 2016 annual meeting is of particular importance in the context of the follow-up to the COP21 in Paris, as well as the G7 meeting in Elmau, G7 EMM in Toyama and in the preparation process for the IPCC’s AR6. It will contribute to setting the global transformation agenda towards full decarbonisation and particularly discuss the future role of science.
The meeting will address:
- How to trigger the non-linear transformation towards full decarbonisation (by2050) as targeted by G7 (Elmau) COP21 (Paris) and G7EMM (Toyama)
- How a “new deal” for green growth could be designed and achieved
- How to explore and exploit the synergies between the Sustainable Development Goals and low carbon societies
- The new role of science in the context of the SDGs and climate policy after Paris
The LCS-RNet (Low Carbon Society Research Network) was established in 2008 by the G8 Conference of Environmental Ministers and comprises independent scientific institutions, whereby Germany is represented by the Wuppertal Institute. The network aims at generating recommendations for the development towards a low-carbon society as well as supporting the exchange between industrial and emerging countries.

News from WISIONS posted on September 4th, 2016
This year’s conference is dedicated to the improvement and dissemination of knowledge on methods, policies and technologies for increasing the sustainability of development by de-coupling growth from natural resources and replacing them with knowledge based economy, taking into account its economic, environmental and social pillars.
We will present a study entitled „Small scale energy projects in the global South - what makes them suitable and what are their (mid-term) impacts? - Results of a Post-Evaluation“.
More information on the conference is available here, along with a full programme.
