Meet the WISIONS Team at the 4s/EASST Conference 2016 in Barcelona
The WISIONS team will participate in this year’s 4S/EASST conference, held in Barcelona from 31st August until 3rd September 2016. The conference aims to explore the ways in which science and technology are increasingly performed ‘by other means’, in a variety of activities that include the articulation of collectives that do not fit with the traditional actors in science and technology, or in ways that question the established value systems involved in the production of knowledge and technologies.
The WISIONS team will be part of the session “Energy Experiments” with a study entitled “Energy Experiments in Off-Grid Regions – Practitioners Roles and Social Impacts“.
Today it is widely accepted that non-technical aspects (or “other means”) are highly relevant for the success of decentralised renewable energy projects. Especially in regions with no or low energy access these projects can be understood as interventions that trigger and accompany transformative processes – in that sense they can be seen as energy experiments.
The practitioners, such as implementing organisations or individual experts, can be seen as the facilitators of transformation. They possess accumulated know-how not only in terms of technical expertise and on-site troubleshooting, but as well as in the appropriate ways of achieving sound and long-term success.
The results we will present in this session are based on insights from a) a post-evaluation of 30 SEPS projects 2-8 years after implementation; b) the analysis of practitioners networks, like RedBioLAC and the HydroEmpowerment network; c) lessons learned during ten years of monitoring small-scale energy projects supported under the WISIONS initiative.
