Meet the WISIONS team at the conference „Energy and Water solutions in sub-Saharan Africa" at Lake Constance, Germany
News from WISIONS posted on October 9th, 2014
Today, 1.3 billion people worldwide are living without access to electric grid-based energy. In Africa alone, about 70% of the total population relies on fossil fuel based systems for lighting such as kerosene lamps and diesel generators. Rural areas of developing countries without a proper grid access also often lack access to other basic needs such as potable water and educational opportunities.
Against this background, the WISIONS team will present a keynote lecture on "Decentralised solutions for renewable energies and water in developing countries". The conference is being organized in the framework of the project "Solar Energy for rural Kenya" supported by the European Union. This project emerged from one of the projects supported by SEPS, which aimed to replace kerosene lights for night fishing by introducing energy hubs to power sustainable lighting systems at Lake Victoria, Kenya.

Enhancing low-carbon food value chains in the Guatemalan highlands
News from WISIONS posted on October 7th, 2014
The aim of this SEPS project was to use biodigester systems as a simple, affordable and user-friendly alternative for small-scale food productive units. Besides the planning and installation of the technology, marketing and communication were important factors of the project, seeking collaboration with stakeholders and raising awareness of low-carbon technologies amongst the general public.
Many lessons have been learned during the last two years:
- The feeding process for the biodigester systems has been greatly simplified by incorporating a purge in the anaerobic reactor that minimizes the time spent on these tasks
- The environmental and socio-economic potential of bioslurry: the "new brown gold" will allow users to pay back the investment in less than three years, which will make the technology very attractive to investors and financers
- Slaughterhouses and municipal markets, coffee and dairy farms, hotels and restaurants, as well as the industrial sector are proving that digesters are an opportunity to reduce production costs while complying with environmental policy
- Alterna and Viogaz S.A. are now working as strategic allies. This bond will provide the capacities necessary to response to the increasing interest in the technology in Guatemala
Concrete Turbine Manual video from our partners at Janathakshan
News from WISIONS posted on September 29th, 2014
The casing for this turbine is built from concrete, while the runner is constructed from aluminium and fibre glass. The turbine efficiency is about 70% and it possesses a number of advantages over its steel counterparts.
In order to share their micro-hydro technology, Janathakshan have made a video demonstrating the steps required to build the concrete turbine. It does not provide all the details, but gives a good overview of the system.
