7th Annual RedBioLAC Conference in Santiago de Chile

This year marks the 7th edition of RedBioLAC's annual conference, which will take place from 9th to 13th November 2015 at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago de Chile. The conference will bring together practitioners in the domestic biogas sector and those interested in learning more about the technology. This year's conference focuses on the growing opportunity and need for biodigestion in Latin America, faced by rapidly increasing urban populations, unstable fossil fuel prices, and a growing concern for effective reduction of greenhouse gases and other environmental impacts from agricultural and urban environments. The conference will bring together actors to share successful experiences, research, and opportunities for multi-sector impact and new funding opportunities.

The event will be held in Spanish language without translation services. The registration form, the conference programme (pdf) and more general information is available in Spanish only on the website of RedBioLAC. Practice-to-Policy Exchange for Grid-Connected Micro Hydro Power in South/Southeast Asia

Organisation: Janathakshan & 5 partner organisations
Country: Sri Lanka
Exchange activity’s aim: to nurture knowledge exchange between multi-actors for grid-connected micro hydro technology across the region of South and Southeast Asia and to empower members of the Hydro Empowerment Network (HPNET) to operate renewable energy technologies apart from the national grid.

Capacity Building for Micro Hydro Electronic Load Controller Technicians in South/Southeast Asia

Organisation: Asosiasi Hidro Bandung & 5 partner organisations
Country: Indonesia
Exchange activity’s aim: to develop local capacity for electronic load controller trouble-shooting and development. The activities include a capacity building programme for the operators of load controllers, as well as the creation of a ‘toolkit’ to be used in implementation and operation practices.

Utilisation of Micro Hydro Power to Strengthen Rural Livelihoods

Advocacy and Replication of Community Organisers for Micro Hydro Programmes in Southeast Asia

Exchange activity’s aim: to encourage the community organisers of existing micro hydro programmes to advocate the replication of successful micro hydro power projects in Southeast Asia.

Rehabilitation and Upgrading of an Existing Micro Hydro Power Project in the Province of Abra, the Philippines

Country: Philippines
Project’s aim: to restore and upgrade one of the micro hydro plants (the Adugao micro hydro power plant) as a demonstration project and to develop a plan to restore the other MHPs in the region. 

Establishment of Demand-Driven Sustainable Improved Watermill Cluster in the State of Uttarakhand, India

Project’s aim: to improve the traditional water mills by replacing wooden equipment in order to make them more efficient and to demonstrate the importance of the technology in the mountainous region.

Demonstration of Sustainable Low Head Pico-Hydro to Deliver Enhanced Rural Energy Services to the Terai Region of Nepal

Project’s aim: to use micro hydro power generated by a low head propeller turbine to demonstrate the feasibility of this clean energy technology in the Terai region of Nepal. 

Hybridisation of an Existing Micro Hydro Plant with Solar PV and Integration with the Grid

Project’s aim: to integrate an existing micro hydro power unit into the national grid to prevent it from becoming non-operational and to demonstrate the potential of a grid-connected micro hydro solar hybrid system.

Extension of Micro Hydro Power for Sustainable Livelihoods

Project’s aim: to demonstrate the viability of an innovative business model for the bulk sale of energy produced by a micro hydro plant to nearby villages, which would contribute to the sustainability of the plant by providing increased finances from the sale of this excess energy.

Grid-Connected Biomass Gasification Plants for Rural Energy Access in Sri Lanka

One of our SEPS projects in Sri Lanka aims to create an integrated development plan for increasing the income level of the low-income farming communities living in the country’s dry region. One of the central goals of the project is to demonstrate the technical and economical feasibility of selling electricity from a community-based wood-gasification plant under a standardised power purchase agreement with the Ceylon Electricity Board (a state-owned utility). This project will help to build farmers’ confidence in the new technology and on the market for sustainably grown fuel wood; thereby creating an enabling environment for replicating this community-based model in about 10,000 rural villages in Sri Lanka.

After selecting the village of Batugammana, mobilising the local community and establishing business and management models, the implementing organization Energy Forum purchased and installed the "Power Pellet", an automated biomass gasifier which was success fully tested in Sri Lanka for the first time during this project. Several technical issues and regulatory obstacles has been successfully resolved during trials, as a result of which the plant was successfully commissioned in Batugammana. 

Further recent project progress and achievements include 

  • The successful connection of the plant to the national grid
  • The signing of a power purchase agreement with the Ceylon Electricity Board
  • The establishment of a fuel wood supply chain
  • The training and capacity building of plant operators
  • The monitoring of the performance of the plant
The operation of the whole concept (from the biomass supply up to electricity generation and selling) is being monitored. The project is expected to be officially concluded begining of 2016.
